"Opportunity" is the object of the verb "spared", from a grammatical perspective. From the perspective of meaning, the opportunity in this sentence is learning from the decisions made.
Sounds like it was the Crown (coin worth 25 pence) produced for the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977. These are normally silver, as it is gold-coloured it may actually be solid gold in which case it's worth an awful lot (the gold alone is very expensive). However, it says it's plated, it may be worth more than just a normal crown as you have the original box and papers. The best way to get it valued is to take it to a reputable coin dealer and ask. If they offer you an amount I'd insure it for two/three times more than that.
they have tons of opportunities due to the demographics of the area
