Can I get some help with coin collecting?

Question by J G: Can I get some help with coin collecting?
I really want to be a serious coin collector. I have some money, but it never seems to be enough to buy all the coins I want. I'm also trying to save for a drumset, and that gets in the way. Can someone help?

Not all interesting coins are expensive. There is a difference between a serious coin collector and an investor. To be a serious collector and a numismatist you must collect coins but also know the history of the coins you have and do some research. You have to find a series of coins you like or maybe a type set of say 20th century U.S. coins. On world coins or ancients there is a big field there, one can specialize in almost anything there from ship coins or animal coins or coins of one country. An area can be picked. I chose Asia 650 BC to 1945. I have put most of the U.S. sets together but still like the older large and 1/2 cents. I started collecting historic medals where research is a must for there are few books. So you have a lot of ways open to you and not all are expensive. Have fun is the most important thing here.

Question by Dale H: I have jar of coins been collecting for about 10 years, would it be worth examining each coin or just cash the?
I have a jar of coins that i have been collecting for about the last 10 years. Would it be beneficial to examine the coins for rarity for someone that does not know much about coins, or just to cash them in. What are my chances of finding something of value. I have noticed many older coins from the 60's.

Chances aren't that great, and rare coins are few and far between...but you never know. Look through them as your time allows..then cash them in.
