I Need help with Gold proof coins?
Efreen Asked:
Okay so I have seen the infomercial on the 1929 gold proof coins. It can be yours for $20.
Is this a replica? Is it really gold? The gold 1929 actual coins are worth $500 or more so I am confused. Is the one on tv junk? Help! thanks
Reply:
These are replicas. They would at best be thinly gold plated. These ads are deceptive because they make it seem like these are real coins from the United States mint. The key word in this ad is "Tribute". The real $5 gold pieces are worth several hundred dollars.
Please also be careful with Home Shopping Network type stuff as well. Although I don't doubt the coins they sell are real, HSN usually charges much more for them than they are worth (advertising on TV costs $$). If you really want genuine gold proof coins, try a local coin dealer. They will usually treat you fairly and charge a more reasonable markup from wholesale prices.
