In the primary elections, any number of candidates may choose to run for president in each party and then, state by state either members of the party in question (closed primaries) or anyone in the general public (open primaries) vote to allocate a states delegates to certain candidate. For the republicans, the winning candidate in each states gains all of the states delegates, while in democratic primaries, delegates are awarded based on proportion of the vote.
After that point, the candidate with the majority of all delegates from all 50 states is set to be nominated at the party conventions. From that point on, one democrat and one republican, selected by the American people run against each other for the Presidency.
