Rare Coins – A Great Investment Opportunity
The sort of things which go towards making a coin collectible include its rarity, its quality and its inherent "collectability". There are a lot of other factors which influence the price - but like everything its all supply and demand - and these three factors have a considerable influence on either supply of the coin or demand for the coin.
Rarity impacts supply. If there are not many of a coin in existence (either because not many were produced or not many survived then a coin is rare. If a coin is rare there are obviously not as many to go round which tends to drive up the price as people compete for the few that do exist. One area that prices often increase greatly is coins that have defects from the mint - these are much rarer than normal oins of their type.
The quality of a coin impacts its price as well. Coins in perfect condition are obviously in greater demand than coins in poor condition - would you want a perfect coin or a coin in very poor condition if you had the choice of either? Often, particularly with older coins, condition deteriorates with age. These coins were generally used and not stored as collectors pieces, so the few coins in excellent condition are rare, impacting on the supply as well.
I am not sure of the correct word, but some coins are inherently more 'collectable' than others. By this I mean that some coins are parts of a popular series with collectors - and as such that drives up the demand for individual coins. If someone wanted a collection of all of a particular type of coin - and one of the series was rare - then that coin would likely increase in value faster than the other coins in the series. Also, there are coins which are better known and less well known coins - the number of people collecting US coins would be far greater than the number of people collecting Latvian coins - so it is likely, all things being equal, that the value of the more popularly collected coin would increase faster than the less popular coin.
So, collecting rare coins for investment can be very lucrative - just make sure that you do extensive research and use common sense. It's all a matter of supply and demand - the less available, the higher the price, the more desired, the higher the price.
